Avoiding Some Common Mistakes When Having a Fence Installed on Your Property
Posted on: 10 July 2017
Your property's fence is very important, as it can enhance or detract from the look of your property, while also marking boundary lines between you and your neighbours and helping to deter thieves and would-be intruders. When you're ready to have a new fence installed around your property, note a few common mistakes many homeowners make when choosing a new fence, so you avoid them yourself and are sure to get the best fence for your home.
Cheap now, expensive later
No doubt your budget a main concern when choosing a new fence, but keep in mind that a fence is a long-term investment; something that is cheap to install may be expensive to repair and maintain, whereas a material that's more expensive to purchase may have less upkeep down the road. For example, a hurricane fence is usually very inexpensive, but it may tend to sag between posts. On the other hand, a wrought iron fence may be more expensive to install, but is much stronger and more durable, so it may need little maintenance in the future.
Matching wood to wood
If you have a deck, pergola, or any other wood structure on your property, you may assume that a wood fence is the best choice. However, it can be very difficult to coordinate wood tones, and your wood fence may look very out of place next to the deck or other such feature. Instead, use a contrasting material when you have a large wood piece on the property; a metal mesh fence can be a nice complement to the wood, or you might install a chain link fence and plant climbing vines at the base. The vines will grow through the links, giving your wood deck a lush backdrop.
Appearance
While your fence should keep your property secure and mark off boundaries, it should also enhance the look of your space; investing a few extra dollars in a fence that improves the curb appeal of your home is often worth it. A wood fence can look very attractive and you can paint it different shades over the years for a nice change when needed, or you can invest in a chain link fence, as mentioned, specifically so you can plant climbing vines at the base and let them fill out, adding some greenery to your yard. Look online for photos of attractive fences before shopping, and don't underestimate the importance of a good-looking fence for your yard.
